Louis Chiron is F1’s oldest race starter; Alonso is oldest on the 2026 grid

Louis Chiron started at 55 years and 292 days. See F1’s oldest starters, Fernando Alonso’s 2026 age, and the oldest winner and champion.
Louis Chiron is the oldest driver ever to start an F1 World Championship race. He was 55 years and 292 days old at the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix. That is the race-start record—not the record for winning a Grand Prix or becoming world champion. Formula 1’s historical ranking places him first.
As of 11 October 2026, the oldest driver on the current grid is Fernando Alonso, aged 45. Autoweek identifies him as the grid’s oldest driver, and the official 2026 roster lists him with Aston Martin.
The five oldest F1 race starters
The ages below are measured on the day of each driver’s oldest World Championship race start—not at retirement, at the end of the season or at a later qualifying attempt.
| Rank | Driver | Age at race start | Grand Prix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Louis Chiron | 55 years, 292 days | Monaco 1955 |
| 2 | Philippe Étancelin | 55 years, 191 days | France 1952 |
| 3 | Arthur Legat | 54 years, 232 days | Belgium 1953 |
| 4 | Luigi Fagioli | 53 years, 22 days | France 1951 |
| 5 | Adolf Brudes | 52 years, 293 days | Germany 1952 |

All five records come from the championship’s early years. Several of these drivers already had substantial pre-war racing careers when the World Championship began in 1950, so their ages do not represent late starts in motorsport.
What Chiron did at Monaco
Chiron’s record-setting race took place on 22 May 1955. He finished sixth for Lancia, completing 95 laps against winner Maurice Trintignant’s 100. The official race classification records both his result and the date; the Mercedes-Benz public archive independently identifies him as the oldest World Championship race participant and gives his birth date as 3 August 1899.
The distinction between entering and starting matters here. Chiron later attempted to qualify for Monaco in 1958 but did not succeed, according to StatsF1’s career history. That later appearance does not replace his 1955 race-start record.
How old is Alonso compared with Hamilton?
Alonso turned 45 on 29 July 2026. Lewis Hamilton, another long-serving driver on the current grid, turned 41 on 7 January 2026. Their ages follow the birth dates in their official profiles: Alonso and Hamilton.
Alonso is therefore still more than a decade younger than Chiron was at his record-setting start. Being the oldest active driver is a current-grid distinction; it is not an all-time age record.
Oldest winner and oldest world champion
Two other age records answer different questions:
- Oldest Grand Prix winner: Luigi Fagioli, 53 years and 22 days, at the 1951 French Grand Prix. It was a shared victory: Fagioli drove the opening portion before handing his Alfa Romeo to Juan Manuel Fangio. Formula 1’s winner ranking credits Fagioli with the record.
- Oldest world champion: Juan Manuel Fangio, 46 years and 41 days, when he secured his fifth title on 4 August 1957. Guinness World Records uses the title-clinching date, rather than the season finale, for that age.
